Step 1: Remove Hardware So You Can Sand The Cabinets After you remove the hardware of your cabinets you can start focusing on the sanding aspect. You can easily use a sanding block to get the job done. Try to sand until the wood underneath the paint is visible. Also remember to sand the bases of your cabinet. After you’ve finished sanding the cabinets, it’s time to start the cleaning process. The process of sanding your cabinets can become messy quickly. Try to cover your appliances with plastic to keep them clean. Also make sure you keep your countertops clear before starting the process of sanding. It’s best to start off the process by having your cleaning utensils on hand already. Step 2: Add the Paint When adding a layer of paint to your distressed cabinets, consider what color you want to be seen underneath the distressing of your cabinet. It’s recommended to choose a contrasting color scheme because that will allow for the distressing to show through. If you do choose to add a contrasting color scheme, remember that it will take at least 12 hours for that first layer to dry before adding your second coat. When you go to the second layer of paint, keep in mind that this is the layer that will be distressed. Step 3: Start The Distressing Process Part of the object of the distressing process is to give your cabinets an antique, gently used look. This can be done by not neglecting the handles and knobs on your cabinets. Try to use sanding blocks or sandpaper to wear down the knobs of the cabinets. You can also use this same method to distress the hinges and sharper edges of the cabinet. Aim to sand the edges until the wooden base of the cabinet starts to appear. Also remember you don’t want each cabinet to look exactly alike. This will add lots of character to your cabinets and your kitchen. Step 4: Add Varnish Varnish will add a level of protection for your cabinets. You can add varnish using a paintbrush. All it takes is a single coat at the beginning. You can add a second coat of varnish after the first coat dries if you’d like. Aspen Kitchens is Here to Help Remodeling your kitchen cabinets is a huge task that can seem daunting to many.
